I had the privilege to first meet Leon when his Father Anton Matzker and my Mother Helen Varga were Residents at Long Term Care at Fayette County Hospital. we both were privelaged to visit our Parent almost daily, and developed a friendship from the start. Like many LTC Residents, my Mother enjoyed playing Dominoes, so Madi, my five year old Granddaughter and I would play a few games on most days. Leon expressed surprise that a Five Year Old was so skilled, and even had his Sister from Springfield come from another room to watch her play. When he told me of his Service in Vietnam, I thanked him. I told him how extra meaningful it was to me because my Wife Judy's Brother was killed in Vietnam. Her Brother was Ronnie Schukar, Vandalia's first casualty in Vietnam, killed in October 1965 while serving with the 173rd Airborne. My Very Deepest Sympathy to Leon's Family on their loss. Robert and Judy Varga
Lots of great memories of this great man. He will be sadly missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you!
Our deepest sympathies to the Matzker family on the loss of Leon. He was a gentle and kind person. I only met him on a few occasions but had deep respect for him. He served his country proudly in Viet Nam and I deeply respect his service to our Nation.
Leon was always so kind. We will miss seeing him at church each week and at all of our church functions. He was always willing to lend a hand. Our thoughts and prayers to the family and our perpetual prayers for Leon.
Had his children in school and always had his support! Going to miss watching him farm across the road and waving! Never failed to speak and super nice. RIP our friend
Leon has been a lifelong neighbor and family friend. He was very humble and kind ALWAYS. I taught all of his children in school and they reflect his kind, friendly nature. On my daily runs around the block, Leon would often roll up along side of me for a minute or two and ask how things were going, give a brief comment on the weather, and say some ENCOURAGING words that kept me going through my run. Prayers for ALL of the family.
Leon was always friendly to me and I enjoyed our chats. He is one of my many second cousins and an all around nice guy. May Leon's sweet soul rest in peace and let the perpetual light shine upon him.
I worked in the Soil & Water Conservation District, and I always enjoyed when Leon came in. He had a dry sense of humor. He was always looking for ways to conserve the soil on the land he was steward of.
Really nice guy!
