John Lloyd Carter

May 8, 1933 - March 8, 2017

John Lloyd Carter, 83, of Shobonier passed away on Wednesday, March 08, 2017 at Altamont Lutheran Care Center. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00am, Monday, March 13, 2017 at Fairlawn Cemetery with Pastor Robert Keen officiating, military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post # 95, Vandalia, IL & Brownstown VFW Post #9770. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00pm, Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Altamont Lutheran Care Activity Department. John Lloyd Carter was born on May 8, 1933 in rural Pana, IL, the son of Bonnie and Mabel (Smith) Carter. He married Margie Dean Dubiel on November 3, 1957 at the Ramsey Christian Church. John served in the US Army, worked for VanTran Industries, Crane Packing and was a self-employed farmer, he loved mushroom hunting, fishing, and collecting rocks. John is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Margie Carter of Shobonier; son John (Jamie) Carter of New Albany, MS; daughters Marsha (Rick) Sasse of Vandalia, Linda (Dennis) Speerly of Millington, and Rae Lynn (Mitch) Koehler of Brownstown; grandchildren Michael (Tammy) Sasse of Brownstown, Matthew (Sarah) Sasse of Vandalia, Daniel (Sarah) Speerly of Millington, Andrew Speerly of Millington, Stephanie (John) Stout of Sycamore, Zachary (fiancé Madison Howard) Koehler of Brownstown, Amanda Koehler of Brownstown; great grandchildren Corie (Cody) Smith of Altamont, Hunter, Shelby, and Adrianna Sasse of Brownstown, Logan Sasse of Vandalia, Kaylanii, Kassandra, and Carter Speerly of Millington, Bayley, Blake, and Bryce Stout of Sycamore; great-great granddaughter Grace Kathleen Smith of Altamont; brother Joe Carter of Springfield; sisters Donna VanUytven of Oconee, Iris (Lindell) Martie of Ramsey, and Carolyn (Bob) Reynolds of Springfield; brothers-in-law Clifford (Sharon) Dubiel of Kingman, AZ and Allen Dubiel of Alexander, AK; sisters-in-law Norma Gable of Shobonier, Rosie Wheeler of Somonauk, Nancy (Jack) Pickel of Bryant, AK and Carol (Jim) Long of Somonauk; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law Frank and Estella Dubiel; son David Lloyd Carter; daughter Lisa Jo Carter; brothers and sisters-in-law Shirley (Joe) Gremba, Wilma Carter, John VanUytven, Mary Ann (Arthur) Lloyd, Donna (Clifford) Robinson, Betty (Albert) Seidenstucker, Frank (Phyllis) Dubiel, Orville “Pete” Gable, and Eugene Wheeler.
