Luralene Joyce Tarter, age 89, of Vandalia, IL passed away at 2:15 pm, Friday, June 3, 2022 at Cedarhurst Memory Care, Greenville after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. A private Funeral Mass will be held at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia with Rev. Fr. Seth Brown officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Memorials may be made to Fayette County Cancer Fund, Caring & Sharing, or donor’s choice. Online condolences can be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com Luralene Joyce Engeling was born at home in Greenwood Twp. Christian County, IL on March 17, 1933, the daughter of John F. and Ora E. (Shafer) Engeling. She married William (Bill) Rodell Tarter Sr. on Oct. 27, 1951, in Taylorville; together they had 9 children and shared 58 years of marriage before his passing on January 02, 2010. Lura was a homemaker as well as a graduate of Kaskaskia College’s LPN program. She was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia where she was active in Catholic Daughters of America and Council of Catholic Women; she was a past member of the Fayette County Home Extension and was very active with 4-H club when her children were younger. She was an amazingly strong woman of faith; faith, family and friends were the most important parts of her life. Lura enjoyed spending time with her family, St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball, and working jigsaw puzzles. She was the best cookie and pie baker ever; at Christmas time she was famous for her homemade caramels. She enjoyed gardening and canning fruits and vegetables; she had a green thumb with a yard full of flowers. Lura was a very talented seamstress and cross stitcher, having made baby blankets for each new grandchild until her health no longer allowed her to sew. Mrs. Tarter is survived by her children, William (Bill) Rodell Tarter Jr. of Carlyle; Diane (husband Randy) Straub of Vandalia; Stephen (wife Beth) Tarter of Vandalia; David (wife Kim) Tarter of Alhambra; Mark (wife Lori) Tarter of Sigel; Kathy (husband Todd) Ehrat, of Savoy; Jeff (wife Melinda) of St. Peters, MO; son-in-law, Phil Jordan of Coralville, IA; daughter-in-law, Sheila Tarter of St. Louis, MO; 25 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; brother, Charles (wife Janet) Engeling of Taylorville; sisters, Betty (husband Alfred) Limper of Rochester, Patty ( husband Larry) Mollohan of Taylorville, JoAn Engeling of Taylorville; brothers-in-law, Deon Young of Irving, Roy (wife Mary Louise) Tarter of Lisle; sister-in-law, Sandy Tarter of Mattoon. In heaven she has joined her husband, William Rodell; daughter, Susan Jordan, son, Dr. James G. Tarter; brothers, John E. Engeling and Raymond (wife Patricia) Engeling; sisters, Wilma Young and Eva O’Brien; and brother-in-law, Harold Tarter.
