Barbara Jean Langley was born on May 23, 1935, in Lovington, Illinois, one of five children born to Ora L. Langley Sr. and Jessie E. (Bafford) Langley. She married Samuel Harlan Smail on April 10, 1955, and they had one daughter. The couple enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage before Sam’s death on March 27, 2014.

She managed household responsibilities, prepared meals for the farm workers, and assisted on the farm when needed. A committed member of Farina United Methodist Church, she played the organ for many years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which she cherished deeply.
