Betty Newberry Mercer's Obituary
Betty (Kern) Newberry Mercer, 92, of Vandalia passed away on
August 27, 2016 at Columbia Rehab and Nursing Center in Columbia,
IL.
Services for Mrs. Mercer will be held at 12:00 noon, Wednesday,
August 31, 2016 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia with
visitation from 10:00 am until start of service at the funeral
home. Burial will follow in Taylor Cemetery, rural
Vandalia. Memorials may be made to donor's choice.
Betty was born August 18, 1924 in Seminary Twp. Fayette Co. IL
the daughter of Lawrence and Maude (Benefiel) Kern. She
married Paul W. Newberry on July 15, 1946, he preceded in death on
December 21, 1971; she later married Chester Mercer on November 17,
1973, he preceded in death on August 8, 2006. Betty was a
member of the Pittsburg Free Methodist Church in rural
Vandalia.
She is survived by her sons Paul Newberry and wife Jean of St.
Louis, MO and Joseph Newberry and wife Dawn of Rushville, MO; step
children Larry Mercer, Terry Mercer, Sherri Olmstead, and Kari
Conger; grandchildren Lori Woodcock and Bradley Newberry; 11 step
grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, brothers
Ernest, Bill, Floyd, Lloyd, Dale and Calvin Kern, sisters Hazel
Hall, Edith Knebel, Eleanor Bearden, Rotha Dothager and Marie
Dothager
