Charles W. “Charlie” Townsend, 90, of Vandalia, IL passed away on Wednesday, May 06, 2026 at his home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Unity Baptist Church, Vandalia with Pastor Clay Hilton officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00-11:00 AM, at the church. A Private Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Evans Public Library or to Friends & Families of SBL Fayette County Hospital. Charles William Townsend was born on January 9, 1936, in St. Elmo, Illinois, to Lewis Oscar and Nellie Francis (Williams) Townsend. On August 26, 1956, Charlie married Glenda M. Jones. Their marriage lasted over 42 years, during which they raised a son and a daughter; she preceded in death on February 16, 1998. Charlie later married Linda S. Koonce Pryor on January 2, 1999; they shared 26 years of marriage before her death on February 16, 2025.
Charlie was a proud United States Army Veteran. After his service, he worked at a gas station, Johnson-Stephens and Shinkle shoe factory, Tri-City grocery, and finally for the City of Vandalia’s water department, where he retired after many years. Known as a prankster and jokester, Charlie’s cheerful nature and smile made him approachable. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, mushroom hunting, arrowhead collecting, puzzles, and collecting antiques from auctions and rummage sales. Charlie’s life centered on family, faith, and community. His dedication to his children and grandchildren, along with his humor and kindness, left a lasting impact.
Charlie will forever be remembered by son, David Townsend and wife Sandy of Vandalia; daughter, Racie and husband Greg Keeling of Mulberry Grove; step-son, Andy Pryor and wife Leslie of Caseyville; brother, Jack Townsend of Kell; grandchildren, Zach Townsend and wife Jenna, Seth Townsend and wife Elissa, Luke Townsend and wife Breanna, Dylan Garrett, and Drew Garrett; step-grandchildren, Colin Pryor, Carter Pryor, Alexis Barrish, Brianna Barrish, and Keegan Barrish; great-grandchildren, Emily, Ryan, Henry, Will, Sam, Trenton, and Tillie; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 8 brothers; 4 sisters; and step-daughter, Marcia Barrish.
