David Glenn Hunter was born on December 4, 1952, in Ashland, Kentucky, the son of William Ivan and Janice Marie (Perrine) Hunter. He married Karen R. Schilling on June 2, 1989, and together they shared 37 years of marriage and raised two children.
David graduated from Centralia High School before continuing his education at Eastern Illinois University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry. A lifelong learner, he later pursued a master's degree. Throughout his career, David held a variety of occupations, but he was especially passionate about teaching. He served as a college instructor at several junior colleges before beginning a career with Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked for many years as a freight conductor until his retirement in 2016.
An avid outdoorsman, David found great joy in hunting, gardening, and farming. Alongside his wife, he proudly owned and operated Dutch Prairie Apple Orchard, where they shared their love of the land with family, friends, and the community. David was an exceptionally intelligent man with a sharp wit and a remarkable gift for storytelling. Whether sharing a humorous joke or a memorable tale, he had a way of bringing laughter and joy to those around him. His faith was also a guiding force throughout his life, and he was a devoted member of Overcup Baptist Church.
He will be forever remembered by his wife, Karen Schilling-Hunter of St. Peter; daughter, Stephanie Depew of Essex, MO; son, Samuel David Hunter of Edwardsville; brother, Paul Hunter and wife Patty of Trenton; extended family and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Janice Hunter; and his biological father, Glenn Carr.
