Donald Slater's Obituary
Donald E. Slater, 92, of Ramsey, passed away at 9:30pm,
Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Fayette County Hospital LTC.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am, Thursday,
February 26, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ramsey with Rev.
Fr. Barry Harmon and Rev. Fr. Joseph Havrilka officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00pm, Wednesday, February 25,
2015 Hohlt & File Funeral Home, with a 5:00pm Prayer
Service. Burial will follow services Thursday in St. Joseph
Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Josephs Catholic
Cemetery or Vandalia Avenue of Flags.
Donald was born February 21, 1923, in Vandalia, the son of
Edward and Effie (Hensley) Slater. He married Margaret
Holbrook April 17, 1949 at St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Ramsey. Donald was a farmer by career but was also a skilled
painter and carpenter. He served in the US Navy in WWII, and
served on the USS Pope (DE-134), one of the five escort vessels
that captured German Submarine U-505 in June of 1944. Donald
was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Ramsey and Vandalia
American Legion Post #95.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Slater of Ramsey; son Dennis
Slater and wife Michelle of Vandalia; daughters Pat and husband
Gary Schroeder of Decatur and Cheryle and husband Mike Meyer of
Brownstown; sister June Deverick of Vandalia; grandchildren Shayla
and husband Jeff Parker and Caleb Slater; and great grandson
Brocton Parker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dale, Max, and
Robert Slater and sister Sue Yenny.
