Doyle E. Powell, 70, of Vandalia, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 02, 2026 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Per Doyle’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A Graveside Service and Interment will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Griffith Cemetery, Brownstown with Military Rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post # 95, Vandalia & Brownstown VFW Post #9770. A Celebration of Life with a meal provided will immediately follow at 11:00 AM, Saturday, at the Vandalia Country & Golf Club. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Got Your Six Support Dogs or to the family to aide with funeral expenses. Online condolences can be expressed at https://www.hohltandfilefh.com.
Doyle Eldon Powell was born on January 18, 1956, in Vandalia, Illinois, to Burt Lester and Dorothy Nevada (Keller) Powell. He married Teresa Kay Commuso on May 18, 1997, and they shared nearly 29 years of marriage, raising two children.
After graduating high school, Doyle served in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he pursued a career with the Illinois Department of Corrections, initially as a correctional officer, later becoming the supervisor of the pasteurizing plant until his retirement. Known for his strong opinions and unique personality, Doyle enjoyed spending quality time with his grandchildren, often teaching them mischievous habits. His hobbies included golfing, observing nature—particularly bald eagles—and collecting various items. He was especially passionate about auctions, earning a reputation as a “dollar box” enthusiast. Doyle was a member of the Vandalia Country & Golf Club and Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447.
Doyle is survived by his wife Teresa Powell of Vandalia; son, Andy Canning and wife Lindsay of Collinsville; daughter, Tabitha and husband Landyn Hubbard of Beckemeyer; brother, Nelson Powell and wife Carolyn of Brownstown; grandchildren, Kenzington, Emma, and Briggs; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Burt and Dorothy Powell; brothers, Dwight Powell and Richard Powell; and a sister, Mary Crook.
