Fred Schmitt Jr.'s Obituary
Fred D. Schmitt Jr. passed away at 11:48 am, Monday, March 3,
2014 at Fayette County Hospital ER.
A Graveside Service will be held at Noon on Saturday,
May 31 at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, IL with military rites
accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95.
A Memorial Service and Gathering will be held immediatly
following the graveside service at the Vandalia VFW.
Fred Jr. was born August 23, 1941 in Shobonier, the son of
Fred Sr. and Marge (Cunningham) Schmitt.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1959 and served his country
proudly for 4 years. He married Pauline "Polly" Leifheit on
September 4, 1964 in St. Elmo; she preceded him in death on
December 29, 1993. Fred was a retired self employed
carpenter.
He is survived by his daughters Kelly and husband Pat Mitchell
of Carbondale, IL; Cara Dickinson of Union, MO, and Pam and husband
Jim Clarida of Marion, IL; son Steve Schmitt and wife Yvonne of
Shobonier, IL; brothers David Schmitt and wife Lynn of Vandalia, IL
and Terry Schmitt of Vandalia, IL; sisters Barbara Atchley of
Vandalia, IL, Karen Bolyard of Vandalia, IL, Kathy and husband
Kenny Bogart of Brownstown, IL, Debby Woolsey of Vandalia, IL and
Jane Hawk of Vandalia, IL; grandchildren Jamie Schmitt of Union,
MO; Devan Woods and wife Dawn stationed at Ft. Riley, KS; and
Anthony Woods stationed at Great Lakes, IL.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, wife Polly, sister
Linda England, grandson Christopher Woods.
