Hershel Dean Wright, 76, of Vandalia, passed away Friday, September 22, 2023, at Bay Area Medical Center in Corpus Christi, TX.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 03, 2023 at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, Vandalia with Rev. Fr. Seth Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Mother of Dolors Catholic Cemetery, Vandalia with Military Rites accorded at the graveside by Brownstown VFW Post #9770.Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday, October 02, 2023 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kashton Mitchell, son of Kegan & Micah Mitchell, for Open Heart Surgery. Hershel Dean Wright was born July 13, 1947, in St. Elmo, the son of Norris and Virginia (Gable) Wright. He married Christine Kienle March 12, 1971, in Bobingen, Bavaria, Germany; together they shared nearly 45 years of marriage before her death on January 05, 2016. Hershel was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the U.S Army. Hershel retired from the Union of Operating Engineers Local 520, Granite City. He was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia and Masonic Temperance Lodge #16. Hershel loved Cardinals baseball and working around the house.
He is survived by daughter, Michele Grabowski of Corpus Christi, TX; grandchildren, Adam and Yadira Grabowski of Corpus Christi, TX; great uncle and aunt, Jerry Gable, and wife Phyllis of Vandalia; sisters-in-law, Angelika Mayr and Helga Kienle of Wehringen, Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and son, Jeffrey Wright.
