Joyce Lape's Obituary
Joyce M. Lape, 86, of Mulberry Grove, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at her home, surrounded by family.
Per Joyce’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services held at this time. Interment will take place in Maxey Cemetery, Smithboro, IL, at a later date. Joyce Marie Koonce was born on July 25, 1939 in Mulberry Grove, IL, one of eight children born to Woodrow and Nina (Nesbit) Koonce. She married Charles Albert Lape Sr. on November 27, 1957. Together they had six children and celebrated 43 years of marriage before his passing on May 29, 2001.
Joyce was a devoted mother, dedicating much of her life to raising her children. She also worked at various local factories and, later, served as a bartender and janitor at Vandalia V.F.W. Post #3862, where she held lifetime membership. Known for her hardworking nature and occasional stubbornness, she was deeply passionate about her family. Joyce enjoyed cooking, especially her homemade noodles, and was very social, often spending time with her sister Lavon, sharing drinks and good company. Her life reflected dedication, warmth, and a love for community and family.
She will forever be remembered by her children, Charles Lape Jr. and wife Diana of Mulberry Grove, Woodrow “Levi” Lape with Carmen Elder of Vandalia, Randy Lape of Mulberry Grove, Diane and husband Larry Cripe of Bingham, Rodney Lape with Shannon Tate of Vandalia; siblings, Richard Koonce of Greenville, Sam Koonce of Vandalia, Debbie Rhodes with John of Mulberry Grove, Betty Lou Carter of Smithboro, Patty and husband Devon Graumenz of Shobonier, Lavon Eubank of Vandalia; grandchildren, Matthew and wife Brittany, Dylan and wife Amanda, Brandy, Ashley, Halie, Tyler and wife Brittany, Brady and wife Casey, Riley and wife Anna; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Alisha, Ayla, Bristol, Adia, Kyler, Ethan, Karter, Benton, Hazel; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; son, Jerry Dale Lape; and sister, Norma Devall.
