Kent Lee Freeland's Obituary
Kent Lee Freeland, 70, of Vandalia, IL passed away at 12:18pm Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am Monday, March 27, 2017 at Northside Christian Church, Vandalia with Pastor Carl Rhodes and Pastor Curtis Sweeney officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Northside Christian Church and also one hour prior to services on Monday, March 27, 2017. Memorials may be made to Northside Christian Church or Vandalia Alumni and Friends.
Kent Lee Freeland was born June 10, 1946 in Vandalia, the son of Kenneth and Marcella (Funk) Freeland. He was a 1964 graduate of Vandalia High School where he was a 3 sport athlete, and was inducted into the Vandalia Athletic Hall of Fame with the 1963 undefeated Midstate Conference Champion football team. He continued his education and was a 1969 graduate of Illinois State University. He married Mary Anna “MA” Engleman on December 8, 1973 in Decatur, IL. After teaching briefly in the Chicago area, Kent and MA moved back to Vandalia, where Kent retired from teaching at the VCHS Okaw Vocational Center; Kent, alongside his father and his son, Kris, also owned and operated Freeland Farms. He was a member and deacon at Northside Christian Church and a former president/member of the Vandalia Lions Club, also making time to serve several terms on the Sharon Township board as a Trustee and Supervisor.
Mr. Freeland is survived by his wife Mary Anna “MA” Freeland of Vandalia; daughter Katherine and husband Dustin Brown of Vandalia; son Kris Freeland of Vandalia; brother Jerry Freeland of Arizona; brother- in- law Jim Engleman of Arizona; sister- in- law Lee Roseland of Iowa; and grandchildren Alyssa Filer and Rustin Brown of Vandalia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
