Lyle Edgar's Obituary
Lyle Charles Edgar, 93, of Vandalia, IL, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Keyesport, IL, at the home of his son.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 22, 2026, at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, Vandalia, with the Rev. Fr. Zachary Edgar officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:30 AM, at Hohlt and File Funeral Home, Vandalia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or for Masses to be offered for him at Mother of Dolors Church. Lyle was born August 4, 1932, in Lakewood, IL, the son of Joseph and Cora (Finks) Edgar. He married Betty Eileen Reed on December 14, 1952, in Shelbyville, IL, and she preceded him in death on January 14, 2019. Lyle was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church. He was a dedicated member of American Legion Post 95 in Vandalia where he served as their Finance Officer and on the Honor Guard detail for many years. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952-56, including 13 months in Korea. Lyle participated in Air Force reunions for many years, as well as the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He worked as a butcher at many A&P and IGA stores throughout central Illinois, while living in Shelbyville, Litchfield, Effingham, and eventually settling his family in Vandalia. Lyle was an avid bowler and participated in several leagues over the years. He also enjoyed camping, traveling, and taking trips down to Tunica, MS with family and friends.
He is survived by his sons, Kevin (Connie) Edgar of Vandalia, and Kelly (Teresa) Edgar of Keyesport; daughter-in-law, Paula Edgar of Vandalia; grandchildren, Rev. Fr. Zachary Edgar, Hannah Edgar, Tyler Edgar, Nichol (Sam) Scott, Cody Edgar, Alyssa (George) Miller, and Caryssa (Connor) Wilson; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Abigail, Elijah, and Willow Scott, and Westlyn Miller; niece, Patricia Rossmell, and great-nieces and nephews of multiple generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; his son, Anthony Kim Edgar; his sister, Geneva Himes and her husband Rollie; and nephew, Larry Himes.
