Peggy Newsom's Obituary
Peggy L. Newsom, 85, of Vandalia, IL passed away peacefully Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Fayette County Hospital LTC.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 12, 2024 at the First Church of God, 3001 Thrill Hill Rd., Vandalia with Pastor Zachary Schaeffer officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 AM, prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place in McInturff Cemetery, rural Vandalia. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to the McInturff Cemetery Maintenance Fund or First Church of God. Online condolences can be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com
Peggy Leona Frazier was born on December 16, 1938 in Plantersville, MS, the daughter of Walter Leon and Dorothy Lavelle (Smith) Frazier. She married Raymond White Newsom on November 05, 1955; together they celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage and raised three children before his passing on June 17, 2020.
In her younger days, Peggy was employed by various places throughout the area. She was the owner/operator of Peg’s Restaurant and was a cashier at both Kroger’s and Schnucks. Peggy was truly one of a kind and had a vibrant personality. She enjoyed playing BINGO and listening to music. Most of all, she cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter, Deana and husband, J.C. Wilkerson of Pryor, OK; son, Darrin “Smokey” Newsom and wife, Amy of Vandalia; bonus son, Terry Sutherland and wife, Susan of Shobonier; grandchildren, Derek Schulte, Jace Wilkerson, Demi Whittinghill, Dawn Cripe, Jason Cripe, J.D. Cripe, Whitney Huggins, and Alex Newsom; great-grandchildren, Davin, Cole, Jayden, Brooklynn, Macy, Ellie, Asher, and Adaline.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Donna Cohen; brothers, Sam Gunter and Walter Frazier; and a sister, Dorothy Lavelle Foreman.
