Phyllis Gable's Obituary
Phyllis A. Gable, 82, of Vandalia, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at her home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 01, 2026 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia with Rev. Doug Wodtka officiating. Interment will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Wednesday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Overcup Baptist Church. Phyllis Ann Daniels was born on August 7, 1943, in Vandalia, Illinois, the daughter of Fred Thomas and Isabell (Engle) Daniels. On June 21, 1980, she married Gerald Edward “Jerry” Gable. Together they shared nearly 44 wonderful years of marriage before Jerry's passing on March 31, 2024.
Phyllis dedicated many years of service to Owens-Brockway in Vandalia before retiring. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister whose greatest joy was spending time with those she loved. She enjoyed traveling with Jerry, thrift shopping with friends, visiting with family and friends, and gathering with loved ones for special occasions. Her children and grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
A woman of deep faith, Phyllis was a devoted member of the First Pentecostal Church in Vandalia, where her kindness, compassion, and steadfast faith were evident throughout her life.
Mrs. Gable is survived by her son, Mike Hobler & wife Connie of Vandalia; son, Ed Hobler & wife Lisa of Vandalia; brother, Jim Daniels and wife Lavonna of Keyesport; sister, Sherry Clymer of Vandalia; grandchildren, Michael Hobler, Angela (Matthew) Graumenz, Anna Hobler, Jonathon Hobler, Lauren Canull, Desiree (Greg) Bennyhoff, & Carly (Erik) Bennyhoff; 21 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; brothers, Mike Engle and Robert “Bob” Brule; sisters, Shirley Doehring and Evelyn Bennett; and a great-grandson, Tru La’Shon Frederick Lockett.
