Stephen Benjamin Sublette was born in Mexico, MO, on July 17, 1958, the son of Beryl Evans, he was later adopted by his stepfather, Mr. Sublette. Stephen grew up in Missouri, but had family ties in the Mulberry Grove area.
He met the love of his life, Kathy Lynn Jones, and they married on May 10, 2003, celebrating over 20 years together; he and Kathy had a unique marriage that worked good for them. Kathy would spend time working in Seattle, WA, and Stephen would keep things going on their farm in Shobonier; they did this for nearly 15 years, until Kathy permanently moved back to IL in 2020.
Stephen enjoyed many different facets of life; he could see the beauty in average everyday items. He recently celebrated over 25 years of sobriety, and originally planned on remodeling and opening the old Shobonier School for a recovery house; Stephen had taken college courses for counseling and always wanted to help others. The original plan didn’t come to fruition, but that didn’t stop Stephen from making an impact on the people he would meet; he would often hand out polished river rocks and quote an inspirational scripture or blessing as he handed it to you hoping to brighten that person’s day.
Stephen was a collector of many things, one being paperweights, he had several hundred displayed throughout his home, another being animals, Stephen and Kathy have over 15 cats, 16 dogs, and 2 horses. He loved taking care of his animals, and loved being outdoors. If you were to drive past their home, you will not mistake it for any other, Stephen has painted lighthouses replicating the ones he and Kathy would visit on the roofs of their outbuildings. Stephen’s most recent project on their property was a large tree house, this was a space for him to find peace; he loved to sit in it and look at the sky.
He will be forever missed by his wife, Kathy of Shobonier; mother, Beryl Sublette of Aurora, CO; stepson, Benjamin Lay of Seattle, WA; and his Crown Point Church family and friends.
