Verhnal D. “Buck” Merrill, 76 of St. Elmo, IL, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Per Buck’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice. Online condolences can be expressed at https://www.hohltandfilefh.com
Verhnal Dean Merrill was born on November 9, 1949, in St. Elmo, Illinois, to William Creston "Creck" Merrill and Ruth Luellen (Harris) Merrill. He married Angela June Spain on March 8, 1985, and they celebrated 41 years of marriage.
Buck worked as a truck driver for various companies and also transported RVs. He was known as a kind man, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His passions included outdoor activities such as fishing, mushroom hunting, camping, and grilling. Additionally, Buck was an avid NASCAR fan and a member of the St. Elmo Rod & Gun Club, reflecting his love for outdoor sports and community involvement.
He will forever be remembered by his wife, Angie Merrill of St. Elmo; son, Michael Merrill with Deb of Brownstown; son, Trever Merrill and wife Cassie of Louisville; sisters, Pat and husband Rollin Duckwitz and Linda Snyder; brothers, Kenny Merrill, Rick Merrill and wife Corina, Orville Merrill and wife Jan, Les Bivins and wife Sis; grandchildren, Lacey Merrill, Brianna Merrill, Will Ferguson, Scarlett Eason, Ruby Eason, Stevi Webber; 6 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Rose Richardson; and grandson, Britton Merrill.
