My name is Stephanie iam 43 yrs old ..I didn't know anything about the man named Glenn hobbie! But one day my husband came home and said sweetheart u said u love old war letters or letters when in that time you communicate bye mail..he handed me a stack and they were from witt IL..I read probley 70 letters that night..I was so into them I couldn't put these letters down ..I remember in one letter about when he started playing and how the other players had 5 shirts and pants and he would build up to have them items him self..there were 3 different ppls letters to one person ..my husband said well Hun who's your favorite ? I said this Glenn dude lol..he said why ..so I stated at the end of ever letter he would close with this well it's getting late so iam going to close my letter and he but BE GOOD underlined in them as I always to my letters ..the next morning I pick up more stacks and thought huh.i have google !! And I was completely shocked ..Glenn hobbie is always in my thoughts and wonders of his life ..and even though I never got to meet him but in a weird way I did meet him..

What I can say is that being a very young boy in the late 50s and early 60s that discovering the game of baseball was so unforgettable. Glenn was one of my very first trading cards. Being able to see him play at Wrigley Field on the green grass under the bright sun or watch him all those afternoons on WGN is always remembered. All I can say is thanks for lighting up my childhood.

Perhaps nobody is reading these anymore, since it has been seven years since Glen Hobbie passed away. But when I was growing up in Iowa I was a great Cubs fan, and he was one of my very favorite players.

I was a pretty successful pitcher in Little League, Babe Ruth league, and high school baseball. I had seen him pitch in person many times and then later on television. I copied his compact delivery and big turn exactly, and it worked well for me.

I was sorry to see that he has passed away and I hope he had a great life.

Glen and I worked together at Roller Derby in Litchfield Il for many years. He was a good friend and a good person. Many years ago we both had to quit smoking for our health so we made a pac that when we both turned 85 we would buy a pack and sit on a swing in Glen's backyard and smoke them. So I guess that's not going to happen Glen. Sharon I wish you and your family my deepest sympathy.

Dave and family,
Very sorry to hear about Glen. I lost my brother Gary a few years ago, and it was one of the most difficult things I've had to deal with. I'm sure this is just as difficult for you.
I had called him about 10 days ago, to ask him if it would be ok with him if I nominated him for the Alumni Award that the Hillsboro Education Foundation presents each year. I didn't realize he was not doing well. He said he was not in shape for it, but thanked me. He certainly would have been deserving -- I don't know of any Hillsboro graduates who played major league baseball, and I think Paulie Chervinko was the only other Witt graduate to get there. Glen had a fine career and never forgot where he came from -- he never developed a "big head," always had time to talk with me and others. Of course, he was also a great basketball player (averaged 22.9 ppg his senior year, I recall, and was a strong rebounder). We had some fine basketball players in our high school over the years, but I always considered Glen the best. He also played very well later on a Hillsboro men's team, with former Hillsboro High School stars.
I appreciated Glen very much, as we grew up -- he encouraged and supported us in our sports (he seemed to be there for all of our basketball games). He joked a lot and was fun to be around.
When I was younger, I sometimes rode on his bike with him, while he delivered papers. Later, I hitch-hiked with him to Nokomis when he played American Legion baseball games, and to Hillsboro to play for the Hillsboro Cardinals (independent men's team). When I was in Junior High, he checked out a book for me from the High School Library, called "Dodger Doubleheader" -- a fine book about baseball and race relations -- made a strong impression on me, and gave me a better understanding of sociological issues.
Several guys from my brothers' era were special to me -- they taught me much about sports and life, encouraged and supported me -- they were the "big guys," the heroes -- and Glen stood out among that special group.

Sharon and family - We were saddened to hear the news of Glen's passing. We always loved seeing him in AZ and hearing all his stories. We pray that God bless you and keep you during this time of sorrow.
